As the world's elite wool industry athletes gear up for the Golden Shears World Shearing and Wool Handling Championships in New Zealand in February, more than 2000 Romney sheep from one of the country's leading sheep breeders are also poised for action.
Peters Romneys breeder Trevor Peters, of Millers Flat, said he was thrilled to be supplying 2300 of his prime stud stock to the championships, being held in Invercargill, in the far south of New Zealand.
Their romneys were great all round sheep with good combing, crossbred wool that shearers and wool handlers at the world championships would relish working with, he said.
Their sheep are renowned for their toughness and ability to thrive in harsh environments including snow and drought.
The sheep would present the world class shearers with a good challenge, he said.
Peters, his sons Clayton and Morgan and stud master Shane Carter, farm six properties, all within two hours of Invercargill.
The family run business includes Spylaw at Dunrobin; Bullock Range at Moa Flat; Clutha Downs at Beaumont, Attadale Station at Middlemarch, Teviot Valley Station at Millers Flat, and a finishing farm at Waikaka, the area where Trevor grew up.
The properties carry about 57,000 stock units across nearly 9000 hectares on land ranging from gentle plains to rugged hill country.
The Golden Shears World Shearing and Wool Handling Championships is being held from February 9 11 2017 at ILT Stadium Southland, and is set to feature competitors from more than 30 countries. About 6000 spectators are expected to take in the action over three days.
"It's a pretty big thing and there'll be people from all over the world. It's going to be pretty awesome," Peters said.
Five time world champion shearer and Shearing Sports New Zealand chairman Sir David Fagan, said the event was shaping up as the world's biggest celebration of sheep and the wool industry.
The event offers something for everyone with the elite competitors striving for world titles, and everyone else there for the festival of shearing, a wool and trade expo, and the camaraderie that goes with it, he said.
The venue, 4000 seat capacity ILT Stadium Southland, is itself a world class attraction, and about 4500 sheep will come through the stadium during the three days, transforming it into one of the world's largest woolsheds.
